It begins. The zipties and machine screws are not far behind.
It has happened.
The toyobaru has become 240.

I can’t spend very much time on there because there is so much of this.
I love my car, but dislike a large portion of its community.

FT86Club hosts a large number of ignorant fuckbois unwilling to actually educate themselves about their cars, who immediately become defensive if you try to give them any factual information that will help them not ruin their car and save a bit of money in the long run. I do my best to stick to the Tracking thread, that’s where most of the people who actually give a damn spend their time.

Stick to the Tracking thread for the most part, that’s what I do. FS section is good too, since all the kids drift into poles and part out some okay parts from time to time.
I feel the same way.

Why would they want your “factual information?” They already know what they need to know, they just want you to tell them how to do it.

The Tracking thread is full of the sort of people like me, who’re just interested in using the cars for what they were actually designed for, sharing that information, talking shop, and educating others. The rest of the threads are mostly full of stancenation hard parking street punks who think they’re Takumi incarnate and don’t know how to use the ‘search’ function.

I was this guy, cannot denigrate...pretty much everything I owned from ~16-20 was horribly mutilated by my ‘customization’. My crown jewel was dryer hose from the butterfly down into a sawzall'd hole in the fenderwell where I put an off-brand K&N filter for a ‘true CAI’ all crunched together with worm clamps. I could totally feel the power yo. In retrospect it was hilariously dumb, but probably no worse than any number of vastly more expensive filter on stick intakes.

That sounds about right; people who track their cars are generally very helpful, and know exactly what they’re talking about. Unfortunately, I’m not in a situation where taking my car out to do anything like that is easy or affordable, so I can’t really go to those threads and fit in. I’m lucky enough to know people who I can talk to for help in real life, though,as well as oppo, of course, so I rarely have to go on any forums

I feel like most import fans were like this to some degree when they were younger, because at that point their points of exposure to the community are generally F&F, Facebook, and YouTube. It’s a matter of how open you are to actually learning from the older/educated/experienced folks that matters. Some grow out of it, many don’t.

Autocross is a fairly cheap way to get out doing some quality driving stuffs. If you can’t afford to build a competitive car, just accept that you’re going out to have fun and won’t be setting any FTDs. Once you’ve been around awhile you might even be able to find someone with a competitive car that would be willing to let you co-drive with them.

My LS400 has only one hoopty modification done to it. My dad(Lexus Master Tech) and I drilled an 1" hole in the intake right before the filter. The only way you can see it is if you take off the plastic cover that routes air to the intake. When you give it a good pull it lets the intake sound out a little more on the 1UZ, part of the fantastic sounding UZ family.

Autocross is definitely something I want to do. Once I have a little more experience driving, as well as some money for good quality safety stuff, I’ll have to try looking into any places local to me
Chris_K_F drives an FR-Slow

Autocross is best to do when you have less experience driving! There aren’t many ways, apart from perhaps a professional driving school, that will teach you to be a better driver faster.
No need to worry about safety stuff either, nearly every single autox organization has loaner helmets. Don’t make excuses, just go. Trust me, you’ll be happier the sooner you get out there.
My first car was an automatic ‘00 Corolla, and I kept making the excuse that it wasn’t a car worth autocrossing. Stupid excuse, that was more just me being worried that people would look at me weird for not having the right kind of car. Boy, was I wrong.
Almost everyone is incredibly helpful, and are excited to see new people (especially young folks) out there trying. Just have a bit of humility, be willing to learn, and go have fun.

That time in my life pre-dates the first F&F, facebook, and YouTube so I don’t have that excuse, heh. Though import tuner magazines were a thing (which I was too cheap to buy so I’d just read them at Borders).
My anecdotal experience is that everyone grows out of it. I still keep up with a good number of the guys I hung with back then and no one's lowering their cars with screw clamps or driving around with their highbeams on colored with blue sharpies to emulate HIDs anymore.

F&F came out at the perfect time for me. Was 20 and I was driving a Prelude which I’d ghetto modified and gotten sick of the quirks and decided to go back to stock. People screwing up their cars literally just gave me stock wheels, tires, intakes, exhausts, wiper mounts (that was an interesting one...), etc. It cost me nothing but time to get that thing back to pristine.

Ive been running into a bit of trouble finding anywhere I could go though. British Autocross is done on dirt tracks, which I’m not ready for, and even though it looks fun in its own way, it's also not something I really want to subject my mini to. Any advice? I’m kinda stuck where to look next

Back when I was 16 I was as many speakers in my 86 Pulsar I could fit oh and under car neon with matching license plate frame I’d burn through alternators twice a year. I grew out of it.
If you're interested I had 2 12s, 2 6x9s and 4 6 inch full range. Backed up 1400 watts across 4 amps. It was loud.

Hmmm... not as familiar (like at all haha) with grassroots motorsports in the UK. This seems like a good place to start learning though:
https://www.msauk.org/
British Autocross, which sounds pretty damn fun, and autotest are probably your best bets for entry level motorsports fun. I’d look for an autotest event or one of the autocrosses on a grass field, as that’s probably a little more forgiving than the gravel. Easiest way to start getting into it is to just go spectate at one of the events and ask questions.

Yeah, it looks kinda of like a cross between American autocross and Japanese gymkhana, leaning more toward the latter given the utilization of handbrake turns (something that is greatly frowned upon in American autox).
Glad to hear it! I look forward to seeing your post about your first event! ;)

It’s probably still a while off, but if I can get to an event, I’ll definitely post about it here.
It also seems that old minis are the go to car for pretty much all British grassroots events, so I haven't really got any excuse not to have a go

Springs would be better than $300 coilovers, as someone points out above. This hard parking fuckboi wants “adjustability, and to clear wider wheels” but apparently doesn’t want dampers that are actually properly valved to match their spring rates or built with quality in mind.

Ah, understandable (less hassle, cheaper, etc etc)... I couldn’t stand to daily the car with the OEM tune and adding the header completely transformed the car... so I went right to STX, lol.

Cheaper is the main thing. Life events coming up necessitate me putting more money into my savings account. I want to keep doing motorsports stuff and would like a competitive build, and selling my coilovers, LCAs, header, and two extra RPF1s should easily cover a full CS prep with TRD parts.
I honestly don’t mind the OEM tune that much.

They are a solid business that I will continue to patronize. That said, they (they, being their forum presence) are not nearly as knowledgeable as they claim to be and it seems taboo to question them on the forums. There is this weird overzealous belief that absolutely everything that comes from CSG is the gospel truth and people actually get angry when you call them out on being incorrect.

Yeah, I’m sure I’d love the added power and flattened out torque curve if I actually installed my header. I just don’t want to spend another ~$900 on an EcuTek license, cable, dongle, and custom tune to install it. haha
